The eagerly anticipated 5-day field trip to Queenstown enabled a ‘real-world’ opportunity for students to develop and extend their geographical thinking and collaboration skills.

Equestrian at Burnside High School for 2021 consisted of three events: Showjumping, Mounted games, and Dressage.

Over the last two weeks of Term 4, we have had both the Fiafia night and Poroporoaki.

This year we had a mixed Junior Team entered in the Term 4 Ultimate competition.

Burnside High School hosted the Christchurch site for the Global Game Jam Next in conjunction with the University of Canterbury this year which ran from July 26 to August 6

The second annual Technology Fair was bigger and better than last year with more entries and some incredible projects getting showcased.

On Wednesday 04 August, our Skiing and Snowboarding team competed at the Canterbury Secondary Schools Snow Sports Championships at Mt Hutt.

Jorja Dann recently competed in the 2021 Hygain Interschool Virtual Dressage Championships with Australia and gained some fantastic results.

In studying history, an important historical relationship is between the Past and the Present. In comparing two periods of time, historians note elements of CONTINUITY (i.e. things that have remained relatively static or continuous over time) and CHANGE (i.e. what has been altered over time).

This year, we were finally out of lockdown and were able to open up more and do more things. For example, a group of senior students took a trip to UC to learn all about Germany and its history and the courses, opportunities and scholarships UC has for them in German.

This year our Future Problem Solving group was coached by Will Wray, our Deputy Head Boy and someone who has experienced previous success in FPS at the international level.

On the 9th of November, a group of 10 Burnside High students flew up to Tauranga and boarded the Spirit of New Zealand.

Despite a slightly interrupted year again there have been lots of great things happening across the Science Faculty this year, with students succeeding well, both in school and out of school. Some highlights are:

2021 has been another unpredictable and unique year.

Many wonderful successes in a turbulent year.

Resilience – we kept hearing it through 2021. Probably because we all have needed to draw on reserves with a year full of happenings and uncertainty. Our students have certainly shown resilience and in the Library there has been a distinct air of ‘head down and just get on with it.’

Table Tennis continues to be strong at Burnside High, despite losing several of our highly-ranked Y13 players who played for our top team over many years.

Even though our numbers have declined slightly, we still have a very interested group of experienced and up-and-coming talent who love their sport of Water Polo.

2021 has been a year of many achievements for Burnside Girls Volleyball.

The Boys Volleyball programme, run by Ben Laing, continues to grow in popularity and achieving great results this year.

It is great to have Underwater Hockey back as one of our school sports after a 15 year hiatus.

In Term 1, the Girls Senior A Touch team competed at the Canterbury Secondary Schools Championships and the South Island Secondary Schools Championships.

Burnside High School powerlifters have had a very successful year.

Another successful year for the group of Air Pistol Shooters.

Again this year, we had another small group competing in the Wednesday Canterbury Secondary Schools' competition at the Bowls Canterbury Green (Makora St) for Term 1.

Korfball at Burnside High has yet again continued to grow and expand to over 30 students throughout the year.

Burnside Ice Hockey had a season filled with heaps of fun and lots of effort put into our games.

This year the Girls 1st XI Hockey team had two new coaches, Anna Wetherall (PE Teacher) and Gemma Sweeney.

The team started the 2021 season off well with a pre-season tournament in Timaru in the April holidays.

Burnside High School continues to be a dominant force on the gymnastics landscape. Our Gymnasts had a fantastic year displaying their many talents.

Our Golf teams continues to be a strong presence in the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Golfing scene.

Fencing at Burnside this year has been an incredible journey.

It was a busy year for the three Burnside High School Cricket teams.

2021 has been a development year for Canoe Polo at Burnside High School.

From a strong showing of social teams entered into the Friday Night Social Competition, to the U17 Black Boys And U15 White Boys winning their grades in the CBA competition, it was a great year for Burnside Basketball.

Burnside High School Badminton has celebrated many successes in the 2021 season.

The Canterbury Secondary Schools Athletics Championships were held at Nga Puna Wai on Tuesday 16 March, with the Finals day taking place on Saturday 20 March.

Archery at Burnside High School continually grows in popularity, with lunchtime and after-school sessions provided by outside coach, Maria Tucker.

At the time of writing, 6 students have been awarded their Award at Bronze Level this year, with a further few students with only a few more hours to complete.

This is an annual award, established by the Board of Trustees, to acknowledge the outstanding contribution to Burnside High School of the late Dr Peter Bryant, in his role as the chairperson of the Board.

The Environment Group has had a most successful year and made excellent progress with our plantings along the Hewlings Stream.

The start of 2021 was like no other.

It has been a difficult year for the crew with lockdown and Covid restrictions which caused the majority of school and the Aurora Centre bookings to be cancelled.

The Junior Boys Volleyball team has followed up last year's result with a back-to-back win at the Canterbury Junior Volleyball Tournament 2021.

The Burnside High Sports Awards ceremony took place on Thursday 21 October.

The 2021 NZ National Boccia Championships were held in Christchurch over the weekend of the 14th - 17th October

Angelina Zhou Narayan was a runner-up in the NZ National Schools Poetry Awards, with her excellent poem "Cultural Tripartite"

The New Zealand Programming contest ran on Saturday 11th of September as an online event just one week after our second lockdown ended. Burnside teams got together at our own school with four teams coming to use the school lab.

This National Competition for talented Mathematics students in years 9 to 11 was initiated in 1985 by Professor Derek Holton of the University of Otago Mathematics and Statistics Department.

Mountain Biking continues to grow in popularity at Burnside High School with a large number of students taking part in the Term 1 competition at the Halswell Quarry.

The inaugural French / Te Reo Maori immersion Cultural Camp took place on April 7-9 in Akaroa.

Students get to grips with the event planning process as part of their internal assessment studies.

A much-anticipated event on the Year 12 Geography calendar; a group of intrepid students set off on our annual three-day alpine adventure. The field research mission was to explore how this unique natural environment has evolved and to gain insight into how humans have interacted with the landscape - past, present and future.

Burnside High School had two teams entered in the Christchurch Schools' Term 1 competition, played on Friday evenings.

Burnside students have been excelling in Athletics this term. Three Athletics events were held this term.

The Burnside Environment Group has been busy this term.

All our rowers and head coach Christina Blackford, in her first year with the squad, had an amazing season. After the disappointment of last year's cancellation, the highlight of the season was attending Maadi Cup at Lake Karapiro. Not only was this an amazing experience for our rowers, they achieved some outstanding results.

Congratulations to the Burnside High Swimming team who competed at the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Championships on Wednesday 31 March, at Jellie Park. The team achieved some fantastic results, which saw Burnside High School win the top school award in the co-ed school category.

It was great to see a good number of new players in the Term 1 competition.

During the 2020-2021 summer holidays, Blaithan Altenberg, Kush Desai and William Wray were given the wonderful opportunity to attend the annual Rotary National Science and Technology Forum
