There have been lots of great things happening across the Science Faculty this year, with students succeeding well, both in school and out of school. Some highlights are:

This year had some key events for German! The annual competitions and scholarships available for Deutsch students began to slowly come back after COVID-19 hit, and the junior classes had numerous fun activities involving food and movies.

As you will have heard Mr Holstein is moving on to new adventures.

2022 has been a great turn out for the Burnside Senior Volleyball team.

This year we had two teams of squash players who played in the weekly Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Squash competition over winter.

Burnside has dominated Table Tennis over the last 5 years, with 2022 being no exception, as our skilful teams achieved fantastic results in the Christchurch inter-school competition and National Secondary Schools’ Championships in Hamilton.

The Burnside Ice Hockey team made outstanding accomplishments throughout the Ice Hockey season in 2022.

Unfortunately between illnesses and weather, it was a very disrupted season for the Girls 1st XI Football team.

Throughout the season the team has had many highs and lows ranging from big wins to tight losses.

In Term one, we started the year with a small group of keen girls.

Hamish Cleary 12WRDS has successfully represented Burnside High School this year in Boccia.

It has been a disrupted but successful season for the Burnside Senior A Girls Volleyball Team.

In the first week of term 4 one of our Dance Academy teams took on the most prestigious Performing Arts competition in NZ.

It’s not every day that the students of Burnside High School unite to form an angry screaming mob!

Ultimate is a fast past Frisbee sport. The main objective is to catch the disc in the end-zone by passing the disc to progress up the pitch.

Aurora Voices is a Junior auditioned choir for treble, singing a variety of genres with Gospel pieces as the main hit for this year.

Burnside High School had four Zonta finalists in 2022.

2022 has been another successful year for Burnside High School in Badminton.

The eagerly anticipated 5-day field trip to Queenstown enabled a ‘real-world’ opportunity for students to develop and extend their geographical thinking and collaboration skills. This experience also provided fantastic opportunities for social interaction beyond the classroom.

Junior Strings is a non-auditioned Year 9 and 10 string ensemble for music students, with nearly 50 students playing violin, viola, cello, and double bass.

Magna Voce is an non-auditioned senior SATB choir for any students that want to represent the school and sing songs they know and love.

This year has been one of the most disrupted years for students completing their Award due to Covid restrictions.

Bel Canto is the senior auditioned treble choir at Burnside High School, consisting this year of 36 girls from Year 11 to Year 13 and led under the direction of Naomi Hnat.

Many of the Secondary Schools competitions have been amalgamated with club competitions so it has been a little difficult to keep up with our gymnasts efforts and achievements. Here is a selection of results of some of their amazing achievements that we have been able to collate. Congratulations to all our gymnasts!

Two teams of students from Burnside High School took part in a nationwide programming competition for girls on Thursday 17 November.

This year on Tuesday, the 16th of August, the Year 11 Geography classes had the opportunity to visit Christchurch city centre ahead of their upcoming exam where students must “demonstrate geographic understanding of environments that have been shaped by extreme natural event(s).

2022 was a hugely successful year for Orchestra, especially following the COVID restrictions early in the year.

Junior Concert Band consists of year 9 to 10 students in the junior performance music classes.

In 2022, another successful year has passed for Burnside High School's big band.

The deferred Canterbury Championships were held in November. The results were outstanding.

Three hundred and twenty students took a leadership role in Years 9 to 11 and made a wonderful contribution to the school.

This year, the Tech Crew has been involved with many events, which in comparison to the past couple of years is a major improvement.

Korfball is a fast-paced, fun & vibrant mixed-gender ball sport that is continuing to grow in the Canterbury region.

Much work has been done by our young environmentalist this year and they should be very proud of their work.

Symphonic Band is a non-auditioned concert band that invites students of all ages and skill levels.

Junior Performance Choir (More commonly referred to as JPC) is a non-auditioned junior choir that rehearses once a week during timetabled classes as a part of the Performance Music subject choice.

Burnsides SMP Jazz is an Auditioned program that runs every Wednesday after school. It is full of aspiring young musicians who got to showcase their talents at multiple performances and competitions thanks to Mr Hood and Mr Oswin.

The Burnside chamber music programme is an invite-only programme largely consisting of members from the specialist music programme.

2022 has been a largely successful year for Burnside High School’s Funk Band.

After losing over half of our team after the 2021 season, we had many new recruits join the team this year.

Unfortunately once again this year, our Burnside High School Cycling Team was again smaller than in other years.

What an incredible journey fencing has been this year, from friendly bouts to competitive events fencing has been massively enjoying not just on the piste but in general.

Year 9 Boys NZCT Cup, Boys 1st XI Cricket and Girls Venus Cup Cricket...

The 2022 school year might be coming to a close but that hasn't stopped our teams and athletes from performing strongly across a range of sports and events. Volleyball, Athletics, Taekwondo and Life Saving have all been on the agenda for our students with some fantastic results.

It was a busy Basketball season with Burnside High School entering one U20, three U17 and three U15 boys teams in the CBA Saturday competition, a boys team in the Thomson Trophy, a girls team in the Whelan Trophy and nine teams in the Friday night schools' competition.

The South Island Secondary Schools Rock Climbing Championships were held at the YMCA Adventure Centre in Christchurch on Thursday 01 and Friday 02 September. We had three Mixed teams entered in this event.

Burnside High Debating has had a successful 2022 despite numerous setbacks.

Finally! After two years of shortened seasons and cancelled SISS tournaments we have completed a full season including preseason, Ashburton Exchange and both Junior and Senior South Island Secondary School Championships.

Five of our students gained top awards in the Australian Infomatics Olympiad Competition.

Five days of sailing, sea, salt and sand, plus a trophy.

2022 has seen two performances presented in the Aurora this year.

This year's Quiz was held on Wednesday 28th September at St. Margaret's College. Both Burnside teams did exceptionally well and were outstanding representatives for our school.

After two long years of cancelled events this year the Junior Boys Basketball team finally got to go to Nelson for the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Basketball Tournament.

It has been a privilege to be the captain of the Burnside Boys Hockey First XI, and I am pleased to say that the future of Hockey at Burnside is in capable hands. There were many changes and challenges that we had to face throughout the year, which we conquered together.

Over the weekend of the 24th-25th of September the NIWA Canterbury Science and Technology Fair was held at the University of Canterbury. We had 4 entries and all came away winning prizes!

Between the 29th of August and the 1st of September, three students from Burnside high school competed in the South Island Secondary Schools Equestrian Championships.

For the first time in three years the New Zealand Secondary Schools Winter Tournament Week was able to go ahead without disruption. Burnside High School had 15 teams competing in ten different sporting codes.

We had forty of our talented Year 9 and 10 students attend the Gifted and Talented conferences at St Andrews College in 2022.

Six students from Year 9 to 13 spent three days engaging in this event which followed the procedures of the New Zealand Parliament.

In August, we formally welcomed the first students, post border lockdown, to Christchurch

On Thursday 11 August the following keen beans travelled up to Mount Hutt, through the snow and low cloud, to partake in the annual racing.

Multiple records were broken by BHS students at this year's national powerlifting championships.

Our aim for the day was to explore different aspects of the New Zealand tourism industry; students gained insight on tourism businesses, work roles and the diverse range of attractions and activities on offer within the ever-popular resort town of Hanmer.

A large team of Burnside High School students competed in this event at the end of Term 2.

Burnside High School competed in the Canterbury and NZ Secondary Schools' Cross Country Championships this term.

A great day out at the Canterbury Road Race. The students loved being out on a trip and as expected were supportive of each other and gave their races 100%.

In the first week of Term 2, a group of excited students, teachers and one parent flew to the United States to attend the Vex Robotics World Championship. One of those events some people will only experience once in a lifetime. The photo above shows the New Zealand teams at the opening ceremony.

Whether it is in Gymsports, Powerlifting, Squash, Volleyball, Football, Badminton, Tennis or Swimming, our athletes are representing our school, their province, country and clubs with pride.

On Wednesday 04 May, Burnside High School's top swimmers competed at the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Swimming Championships.

Over the past 7 weeks, we have had a small canoe polo team, competing on Wednesday afternoons, at Lake Roto Kohatu.

In a challenging term Burnside High School Students have once again excelled in this competition run through the Australian Mathematics Trust.

Despite Covid disrupting yet another NZ Secondary Schools Summer Tournament Week, we were lucky to still have teams competing in modified events during the week, Monday 28 March - Saturday 02 April.

Paris Chin 13PZS is currently competing overseas with the NZ Rhythmic Gymnastics team.

The swell was up and stoke was high. The groms (kids) were paddling into bombs and throwing shakas at the beach.

It was was another very successful season for the BHS Rowing Squad.

For the third year in a row, the BHS Robotics team "4067X" won a place at the Vex Robotics Nationals Competition!

This event was modified from our normal school wide event to a Senior only event held on Friday 25 February.

Due to the much anticipated refurbishment of the school swimming pool, this event was held at Jellie Park on Wednesday 02 March.
