I have enjoyed creating and compiling this magazine and am sure you will too.

As our slogan has been, it takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a child to raise the Earth.

It was a much more lively place up in the Edmond Rice building this year and we enjoyed the extra company!

This year inside of JOHA we have had many highlights. To name a couple, the school fair, Mr. Hart’s pizza shouts and going to the driving range. We have each chosen one highlight of our school year and will be covering it in our report.

STC went up against Boys High in a mid-week cricket game. Sadly we lost heavily ... a few photos attached. Boys High 320/5 and STC got 89 runs. One standout for STC: Charlton got two wicket and 25 runs.

although we couldn’t quite reach the heights we did during swimming sports the boys put in another valiant effort finishing a solid second.

The STC 2nd 11 football team enjoyed a successful season in 2016, finishing 3rd overall in the inter school competition.

The St Thomas team Tribal - won the Supreme Regional Award for 2017 and will go to Wellington on 6 December to complete for the National Company of the Year Award.

Keep fit over the break boys, it’s going to be harder and faster again in 2017!!

A number of prospective builders in year 12 visited the site of the new gymnasium that is nearing completion. Hamish Johnson from Apollo was an excellent host and had great advice for these future builders and carpenters. They were the first students to see the complex prior to its finish in mid-November. No photos of the gym were taken to keep it all under wraps and off social-media until it's finished. The impression on the lads was one of awe as they saw the sheer size of the building. Luckily they have one more year to go and so will be able to enjoy all the facility has to offer them. Then its "off to work they go"... 

"Compliments of the Canterbury Rugby Union, the Ranfurly Shield arrived at the College under the stewardship of Oliver Ryan a member of the champion U14 rugby team and was displayed at Assembly. Lots of selfies and photo's were taken by the boys. The shield was donated by the Governor General Lord Ranfurly in 1902 and was first played for in 1904. "

The STC 12 Outdoor PE class completed the Greymouth to Hokitika section of the West Coast Wilderness Trail.

The combined St Thomas of Canterbury College and Villa Maria College production of the musical Grease has been a huge hit with audiences this week. 

The Christchurch School of Music advised in May that Patrick Hansen (Year 12) had attained a position in the University of Canterbury, Christchurch Youth Orchestra for 2016. Many professional musicians have begun their career performing in this orchestra which is the flagship orchestra of the Christchurch School of Music and has recently been sponsored by the University of Canterbury. The auditions for this orchestra started at the end of 2015 and continued until the end of February this year. The standard of students auditioning was extremely high. 

Comedian and St Thomas Old Boy, David Correos, is the latest to receive New Zealand’s prestigious comedy award - the Billy T Award.

A win in all three games secured the trophy for St Thomas.

This year the student leadership team decided that they wanted to leave a legacy within the school and make a change within the community. They decided that doing a large ‘Shave for a Cure’ project would target both of these goals.

How do our teenagers actually think?

In 2016 we recognised the growth of our Filipino community, with the appointment of Francis Verbo as Filipino leader and his family attended assembly to place the leader badge on him. The Filipino leader role will become part of the student voting and election process at the end of this year, for announcement at prize giving and will be an established role in the student leadership team. Congratulations are extended to Francis on the fine work he has done bringing our Filipino students together and to his proud parents.

The STC Junior Futsal team competed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Futsal Championships in Wellington. After winning their semi-final against Nelson College, the team went on to play Hastings Boys’ High School in the final. A win of 2-1 gave STC the Junior Championship title.

Congratulations to Jaden Ransley who won a New Zealand title  at the National Kart Champs in Hamilton. He won the Junior Yamaha class. He won the South Island title & National Schools titles last year. 

After 33 years at STC, Wendy Marshall, our Library Manager, has retired.

The Calling Ceremony.

In March, nine of our Year 12’s attended the Caritas Justice Leadership Day at St Gregory’s Parish Centre. The day was spent getting to know and understand how countries such as Syria, New Guinea and Cambodia are struggling under various forms of inequality and what can be done to assist and promote change. As usual, the students represented the College with pride and spoke with maturity, eloquence and passion. The College looks forward to seeing how these young leaders will put their new found skills into practice.

The team features a good mix of youth and experience and have been very lucky to call on the leadership of old boy Jonny Van Der Velde as head coach.

The leadership camp is a spiritual retreat, networking and planning conference for Edmund Rice Schools' leaders. Held in Auckland 5th to 8th of March - run by Brother Damien Price.

In recent years it has become almost a tradition for Marlow to dominate in the water and this year was no different.
