This year the Year 8 end of year camp was held at Glentui Meadows near Oxford from Tuesday 1 to Friday 4 December 2020.

As it always does, Term 4 is disappearing at a rapid rate. Here are some important bits of info to help you keep pace.

Head lice are very common in the community and we have noticed that some students at school have head lice at the moment. Please check you child's hair.

Term 4 is racing ahead. Here's a brief run down of what we have been up to this week.

On Thursday the 29th of October, the Oaklands te kura o Ōwaka Kapa Haka group performed at Christchurch Arena.

Another week is done and dusted! Bring it on Week 4!

Amber Hill, Head Girl at Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka in 2020, is also a talented and successful singer.

The start of term 4 has seen the Year 7/8 hit the ground running.

The last term of 2020 is nearly upon us. This post will help you ready yourself for term 4.

Mrs Baker has had her baby. We are very happy for her and Scott.

We did it. We got a whole term of 2020 in without too much disruption.

The 2020 Ellesmere Speech Competition was held on Monday 21 September. This year the competition was hosted by West Melton School.

Good afternoon whānau. The students in Taiheke Hub have planned and prepared a series of videos. These were put together to share the student's thoughts and feelings about the opportunities that are available at Oaklands te kura o Owaka.

This week should have seen most of the year 7/8 Hub competing at the Koru Games.

This Friday we farewell Mrs Baker who is leaving us to start an exciting new chapter as a Mum!

The first round of the EPro8 Challenge has come to an end.

Here's a quick update about what's happening in the Year 7/8 Hub.

The annual Year 8 fundraising quiz will be held later this term. All info can be found below.

Term 3 starts this coming Tuesday; 21 July. We are looking forward to another action packed term in the Year 7/8 Hub.

On Friday 31 July we will be holding a plastic toy swap in the hall. Over the holidays students can clear out any unwanted toys, bring them to school and swap them for another toy. This stops plastic toys from ending up in the rubbish dump where they won't break down.

They say time flies when you are having fun. This must mean that we have had some fun because Term 2 seems to have just flown by!

The EPro8 Challenge is a competition that combines , Design and Technology, Engineering and Problem Solving. Every year over 10,000 students from 900 schools from throughout New Zealand take part.

With many High Schools and Colleges cancelling open nights in the wake of Covid-19, we are pleased to be hosting Hillmorton High at Oaklands School.

Here's a look into what's been happening in the Year 7/8 Hub.

It has been an exciting week for us as we compete in the Virtual International Community Problem Solving Competition being hosted in Massachusetts, USA. In the photos below you can see us taking part in the opening ceremony. During the week we have interacted with the virtual platform where we have been able to watch presentations and projects from around the world. We did not get a place at the awards presentation today but our video about our project was highly commended.

This week has been busy and productive in the Year 7/8 Hub.

It has been great to see most of the Year 7/8 hub settling quickly back in to life at Oaklands.

This is the first week back from our extended lockdown.

It has been great to see our students return this week. Their smiling faces and excitement has been great to see.

It's been a busy term in the Year 7/8 Hub. We have been involved in a huge variety of learning opportunities. Read some of the student's thoughts on term 3 below.

We are fortunate to have School Based Mental Health Services coming in on the 22nd October at 6pm to speak to our parents and anyone else who might have an interest in the subject of anxiety in children. They will be speaking about what anxiety is and how to recognise it in children and then, the most important part, what can be done about it. Some practical, hands-on ideas to make everyone feel better.

Our annual quiz night fundraiser for our Year 8 Wellington Trip was held last Friday, 20 September.

Now in its 6th year, the Koru Games is a three day multisports tournament that provides competitive sporting opportunities for Year 7/8, students across a range of sports. Oaklands School once again took part and did very well.

This week is the last week of their first rotation at Lincoln Primary.

Students across the school are learning about personal safety through the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme developed by the NZ Police.

This week 20 of our Physical Activity Leaders (PALs) took part in some professional development.

Keeping Ourselves Safe enables children and young people to learn and apply a range of safety skills that they can use when interacting with others. Students learn to recognize the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, and those who have been or are being abused are encouraged to seek help.

On Thursday, March 21st we will be celebrating the cultural diversity at Oaklands School with a Multicultural Celebration day.

Our annual learning experiences at Te Hapua have started up once again and the students are excited about the learning opportunities that lie ahead.

Wainui Camp is a camp just for Year 7 Students to jell and build rapport with their teachers.

The Year 7/8 Hub is already in full swing. The next few weeks promise to be very busy as we get back into learning for 2019.

CARE Nominations for 2018 are closed and we are very excited to be handing out the last of our CARE awards for the year over the next two Mondays.

We had a fabulous 3 days in Wainui. Activities included high ropes, archery, team building, kayaking and some intense games of spot light! Here is a wee snippet...

As usual we have been busy and we also have lots coming up in the next few weeks as well.

Over the last three weeks we have been setting up our Leadership Programme and Home Learning Challenges. We are getting these things ready now so it sets us up for success for the rest of the year.

All of the Year 7/8 students have a leadership role for the year. The roles include Peer Mediators, Librarians, PALs and Assembly Crew.

The GRIP Leadership conference was an opportunity for our Year 7 students to develop as leaders.

This past week the Year 8s have been in our nation's capital.

Summer is definitely on it's way! 1AH and 1RP loved their time with their big buddies outside in the sunshine.

The first day of spring brought us rain which meant that we were inside the spending time with our big buddies in the year 7 and 8 hub.

In Week 4 of this term (6-10 November), we are celebrating our annual Literacy Week.

Once again this term promises to be and action packed.

Each year the head students spend a day out in the community trying to get donations of items to be used as quiz night prizes. 

Engaged and motivated writers. We have had real purpose to our writing recently. 

Our Hockey and Netball teams flew the Yr 7/8 flag at this prestigious event.

Next week will see our students participating in a number of mid term tests. 

Each week a group of year 7/8 students attends coding and robotic workshops at Te Hapua. 

South West Zones Winter Tournament. 

The history and the traditions of the South West Zone are important for the future at Oaklands!

As part of the home learning programme, students are set the challenge of reading 40 books in a year.

At morning tea on Tuesday, students will be able to buy some yummy morning tea. All the proceeds from the sale go directly towards the Year 8 trip to Wellington in Term 4. All items will be $1 or $2 each. Thanking you in advance for supporting our fundraising effort.

The Year 8s will be running a Naked Baker Pie Fundraiser to raise money for their trip to Wellington.

No time to waste. Term 3 here we come.

Our Careers Education unit has ended with each student   writing a Curriculum Vitae to showcase their skills. See what they thought about the process below. 

Our senior students are very busy with their leadership responsibilities around Oaklands

We have been learning about Visual Art conventions and how to use chalk pastels.

Maths is a major focus in our hub. We aim to prepare our students for high school and our results and student feedback show this is happening well.

This term the Year 7 and 8 students have been looking at careers. Part of our careers education programme involved the students researching a chosen career and then writing about these. Below are some great examples  of our careers writing.

The last couple of weeks has seen the Year 7/8 Hub students complete many learning goals.

Being a leader is hard work and rewarding, the student leaders are finding out.

Each week many of the Year 7 & 8 students are involved in the Buddy Programme. This involves the seniors leading the juniors in a variety of activities. 

Our student leaders have started to take action with things they want to improve at Oaklands School

This week all of the Year 7 & 8 students took part in a leadership training day.
